CIE Tutorial on Monte Carlo Method for Uncertainty Analysis (17 Sep 2026)

The CIE Tutorial on Monte Carlo Method for Uncertainty Analysis is organised by CIE NC Korea and CIE Division 2: Physical Measurement of Light and Radiation, in conjunction with the 16th International Conference on New Developments and Applications in Optical Radiometry (NEWRAD 2026). It will take place at the Seogwipo KAL Hotel in Jeju Island, South Korea, on 17 September 2026, following the conclusion of NEWRAD 2026. The tutorial will start at 13:00 and conclude at 18:30 Korea Standard Time (UTC+9). The CIE Division 2 Annual Meeting will take place on 18 September 2026, from 08:30 to 12:00 Korea Standard Time (UTC+9), at the same venue. Meetings of several CIE Division 2 Technical Committees will follow after the Annual Meeting.

CONTEXT AND CONTRIBUTION TO CIE WORK

The CIE Tutorial on Monte Carlo Method for Uncertainty Analysis will present the principles and practical applications of the Monte Carlo method for uncertainty analysis in photometry and radiometry, with reference to CIE 198:2011 Determination of Measurement Uncertainties in Photometry and its supplements CIE 198-SP1.1:2011 Modules for the Construction of Measurement Equations and CIE 198-SP1.2:2011 Examples for Models with Individual Inputs. The tutorial provides both theoretical background and practical guidance, supporting professionals in strengthening their understanding of uncertainty evaluation in line with established CIE publications.

The tutorial offers valuable insights and is particularly relevant for professional working in photometry and radiometry, including photometry calibration laboratories (such as National Metrology Institutes), testing laboratories in photometry, radiometry, and colorimetry, as well as manufacturers and users of photometric and radiometric instruments.

CIE Workshop on Future Topics in Road Lighting (13 Oct 2026)

The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) will hold the workshop “Future Topics in Road Lighting” on 13–14 October 2026 on the occasion of the annual meeting of CIE Division 4. The event is organised in collaboration with the Italian National Committee of the CIE, the Italian Association of Lighting Manufacturers (ASSIL), and the Italian Lighting Association (AIDI), and hosted by the National Metrology Institute of Italy (INRiM) in Torino.

The workshop will begin on the afternoon of 13 October and conclude by lunchtime on 14 October.

CIE Division 4 and Technical Committee meetings will take place at the same venue from 14 to 15 October. These meetings are scheduled to conclude on the afternoon of 15 October, by 13:30 local time.

The workshop will address key themes and cross-disciplinary aspects expected to shape the future of road lighting, including:

Adaptive lighting systems
Road surface characterization of current road surfaces
The illuminated road environment for all users
Obtrusive and ecological lighting impacts
Challenges related to autonomous and assisted vehicle sensors
Emerging recommendations and new calculation approaches for road lighting

The event is designed to foster open discussion among chairs, invited speakers, and participants (including dedicated student opportunities), with the goal of gathering valuable input to support CIE Division 4 Transportation and Exterior Applications in developing its strategic roadmap.

Ample time will be devoted to interactive discussions and a panel session featuring a SWOT analysis of current and emerging road lighting topics.

The schedule has been designed to optimise travel logistics, minimizing overnight stays for participants attending both the workshop and the subsequent CIE meetings.

The programme will be enriched by social events designed to encourage networking among international participants:

13 October | Workshop Dinner “Future Topics in Road Lighting”: At the end of the first day of the “Future Topics in Road Lighting” Workshop, participants are invited to a convivial dinner on the River Po, in the city centre.
14 October | Casa Martini Experience: As part of the TC 4-11 activities, at the end of the Division 4 TC meetings, an evening event will be held at Casa Martini the historic distillery in Turin founded in 1863 and renowned worldwide. The evening will include a guided tour of the production facility and museum, followed by a Vermouth Class for an immersive experience into the world of Vermouth and Martini.

REGISTRATION

The workshop is subject to a registration fee, which includes the social dinner on October 13. Meetings of Division 4 and the Technical Committees are free of charge. The Casa Martini experience, scheduled for October 14, will be available for an additional fee.

Registration will be open from April 1 to September 15, 2026. An early-bird rate will be available from April 1 to July 31, while the standard rate will apply from August 1 to September 15.

November 12-13, 2026

The joint Canadian & United States CIE National Committees and the Council for Optical Radiation Measurement (CORM) conference will be held virtually on November 12^th to 13^th, 2026.

We invite abstract submissions for oral presentations covering any topic related to optical radiation, light, lighting, and vision, including but not limited to:

CIE Online Tutorial on the CIE L41 Reference Spectrum (17 Nov 2026)

The CIE will hold an online tutorial on the CIE Reference Spectrum L41 on 17 November 2026, from 13:00 to 15:00 CET via Webex.

This two-hour tutorial will explain the need for an LED reference spectrum in the context of the transition from tungsten light sources to LED-based lighting. It will introduce the CIE 251:2023 LED Reference Spectrum for Photometer Calibration, describe its key properties, and present practical use cases in calibration, measurement, and simulation.

The tutorial will also provide guidance on implementing the reference spectrum in laboratory and industrial workflows, supporting broader adoption by photometry calibration laboratories, national metrology institutes, and manufacturers and users of photometric instruments.

For both CIE members and non-members, the tutorial offers special package pricing that includes access to the CIE 251:2023 LED Reference Spectrum for Photometer Calibration publication as part of the registration fee, making it a particularly valuable opportunity to obtain both expert training and the publication together.

This tutorial will be particularly useful for photometry calibration laboratories, including national metrology institutes, as well as manufacturers and users of photometric instruments who are working with LED-based lighting, calibration, measurement, or simulation.
